Project leaders of the CRC Future Rural Africa recently participated in the workshop Preparing Research Projects: A Focus on Fieldwork Safety, organized by the CRC’s Board for Gender Equality and Diversity. The workshop was led by the Safer Fieldwork Project, an initiative dedicated to raising awareness of the importance of researchers’ physical and emotional safety throughout all stages of fieldwork. Its founders and workshop facilitators, Laura Thurmann and Tamara Grupper, both have backgrounds in anthropology and extensive fieldwork experience.
The Safer Fieldwork Project is founded on the understanding that negotiating safety in the field is both a personal and a methodological concern. Accordingly, the workshop aimed to support project leaders in proactively integrating safety considerations into the planning and design of their fieldwork projects.
This workshop marks the second collaboration between the CRC Future Rural Africa and the Safer Fieldwork Project. In 2022, the organization facilitated the one-and-a-half-day workshop (UN)LIMITED POSSIBILITIES? A Workshop on Gendered Safety and Positionality During Fieldwork, laying the foundation for the CRC’s ongoing engagement with fieldwork safety.
