The workshop “Gender equality in science. Identify the barriers. Shape the Change”, led by science communication expert Eva Lindner, brought together five participants for an intensive day of reflection and discussion. It was organised by the Board for Gender Equality and Diversity of the CRC/TRR 228 Future Rural Africa.
In a warm and trusting atmosphere, participants discussed structural “gaps and traps” in academia, ranging from the gender pay and care gaps to inequalities in citations and speaking opportunities. They also explored how stereotypes and tokenism continue to shape scientific careers.
A central part of the online workshop focused on empowerment. Through affirmations such as “I’m good enough” and “I take the space to speak and write”, participants reflected on ways to counter perfectionism and self-censorship. They also addressed online hate speech against scientists, particularly women, and developed practical strategies and resources for dealing with harassment, moderating attacks, and recognising when to seek institutional support.
Finally, participants examined the role of allies, mentors and solidarity networks in driving structural change towards more equal opportunities in science. The small-group setting, practical tools and open discussions provided space for reflection and exchange, equipping participants with ideas and strategies to promote change within their own institutions.
