Ghost Projects and Infrastructure Development: Third World Quarterly Special Issue Launch
This recording documents the launch event of the open-access Third World Quarterly special issue “Ghost Projects – Ruined Futures and the Unfulfilled Promises of Infrastructure Development” (2026), guest-edited by Detlef Müller-Mahn, Eric Kioko and Theo Aalders.
The special issue explores “ghost projects” – unfinished, delayed, abandoned or never-realized infrastructure developments whose lingering presence continues to shape development visions, policies and practices. From mega-dams and roads to urban developments and airports, these projects reveal the ambiguities of infrastructure and the unfulfilled promises of development. The launch event features a conceptual introduction to the special issue, short presentations of the individual contributions, comments from a discussant, and an open discussion. Produced in the context of the Collaborative Research Centre (CRC) 228 Future Rural Africa: Future-Making and Social-Ecological Transformation.

„Future rural Africa“ is an interdisciplinary collaborative research center funded by the German Research Council (DFG) involving geographers, anthropologists, political scientists, agroeconomists, soil scientists and ecologists from the Universities of Bonn and Cologne as well as external partners to address large-scale land use change and related social-ecological transformations along growth corridors in Eastern and Southern Africa.
