“Future Rural Africa” at Berlin Science Week 2022: The Future Lies in Africa

The Future Lies in Africa

FR | NOV 04, 2022 | 11.30 – 13.00 BERLIN TIME

The future is a battlefield of hopes and fears, competing interests and expectations.

Confronted by multiple overlapping crises, we have to acknowledge that the future cannot be taken for granted, and that it may even come as a complete surprise.

Living with uncertainty is a common experience in large parts of the African continent, where climate change, rapid social transformation, and economic disruptions present major challenges for future-making. The session presents some highlights of joint research projects in collaboration between the university of Bonn and African partners.

It addresses the following questions: How do African futures become accessible in collaborative scientific research? What characterizes the possibilities and probabilities of African futures? What can we learn from African experiences in regard to future-making practices?

Jointly organised by CRC-TRR 228 researchers Prof. Dr. Lisa Biber Freudenberger (Project A05), Prof. Dr. Detlef Müller-Mahn (Project C03), and Vincent Moseti Project A05) in collaboration with Dr. Juliet Wanjiku Kamau (Coordinator ‘African Climate and Environment Centre – Future African Savannas (AFAS)) and Prof. Dr. Gabin Kouévi Ananou (Associate Professor for Climate Change and Diplomacy (University of the Gambia) and Head of the Coordination Team Climate Competence Centres WASCAL und SASSCAL).

Berlin Science Week is an annual science festival from 1 to 10 November that brings together thousands of people from the worlds of science, business, politics, the arts, and society at large.
