Online Lecture: Grappling With Conservation Futures – Reflections and Insights from Iconic Landscapes in Australia. With Carina Wyborn (Australian National University)

Tue | March 18th, 2025 | 9:00 (CET)

Carina Wyborn is an interdisciplinary social scientist with background in science and technology studies, and human ecology. Her research focuses on understanding how decisions are made in complex and contested environmental governance and management challenges. She is currently associated with the Fenner School of Environment & Society of the National University of Australia. Following an invitation by Lisa Biber-Freudenberger (Project A05 Future Roads), Carina Wyborn will give an online lecture exploring the complex challenges of conservation in a changing climate. The contribution will focus on how stakeholders navigate ecological transformation, community engagement, and difficult trade-offs through the lens of three iconic Australian landscapes.

Grappling with Conservation Futures: Reflections and Insights from Iconic Landscapes in Australia
Ass. Prof. Carina Wyborn (Australian National University)

Climate change is transforming ecological systems, challenging conservation efforts and reshaping the landscapes we hold dear. As iconic ecosystems face radical shifts, conservationists must confront complex questions: How do we envision these uncertain futures? How can we engage diverse communities in shaping them? And how do we navigate the difficult trade-offs between preserving present values and embracing future possibilities?

Beyond technical and political challenges, there’s also a deeply personal dimension—managers are grappling with the potential loss of species and ecosystems they’ve long worked to protect. This presentation will explore these dilemmas through the lens of three iconic Australian landscapes, offering insights into the tough choices and new approaches required in an era of ecological transformation.

Associate Professor Carina Wyborn is an interdisciplinary social scientist at The Australian National University’s Institute for Water Futures and Fenner School of Environment and Society. Her research examines how stakeholders navigate complex environmental challenges, with particular focus on climate adaptation, water governance, and biodiversity conservation in the Murray-Darling Basin, Australian Alps, and Western United States. She has worked internationally across the Americas and Europe, engaging with government and non-government organisations to influence policy at multiple scales. In 2022, she received the Society for Conservation Biology’s early career award for outstanding contribution to the conservation social sciences.
