Workshop: North-South research partnerships

The worldwide outcry after the violent death of George Floyd is a fierce reminder that racism and structural forms of discrimination are still omnipresent. Amidst the Covid-19 pandemic, Black Lives Matter-protests have brought debates about police violence against marginalized groups and other forms of racism and structural discrimination to the fore.

Within the CRC, these debates have triggered a discussion about academic North-South partnerships and the funding structures within which these research collaborations are embedded.

In a workshop on 12.10.2020 from 15:00-17:30, we want to deal with the questions around power structures and partnerships. For this purpose, we have invited Vanessa E. Thompson, who will prepare an input on the topic. Afterwards, there will be room for discussion and questions based on Vanessa Thompson’s presentation and common reading.

The objective is to discuss scientific partnerships, especially with regard to the planning of the 2nd funding phase of the CRC and to formulate an open letter to the DFG in order to call for improved framing conditions for scientific partnerships with partners from the Global South.

Due to the current restrictions with regard events at Universities, the workshop will take place online via Zoom conference call. We are looking forward to your participation. Please register your attendance with Lea Carstens (lea.carstens@uni-koeln.de). We are also happy to organize child care if needed.

Matian van Soest, CRC Scientific Coordinator.
