National Stakeholder Meeting: Mining, Livelihoods, Ecosystems – Issues in Kenya’s Sand Trade

A collaboration between the University of Gothenburg, USIU-Africa and Maseno University with support from the Japanese Society for the Promotion of Science and Newcastle University:

Sand is the world’s most mined solid resource. Urbanization, large infrastructure, and modern life hinge on a
sustained availability of sand. What appears lying idle waiting to be harvested from pits and riverbanks, is in
fact a resource brimming with contestation. The UN has warned about a looming global sand crisis as cities
grow at an unprecedented rate.
